The first cut system is coming today. Of course, I went for not so fancy pants, but still fancy pants option [1]. Gonna practice on some birches first before I go for the oak.
I'm excited to get that oak down but also a bit nervous. It's the biggest thing I would have felled. Just a "smidge" over 380mm. 😅
I wanted to build one, but it was never gonna happen. Yeah, the 462 is as big as I have. I have a 36" bar for it as well as a panther ripping chain, but if you're offering to come and assist?
If you are going to do oak on that saw I’d have a look at an Oregon hyper skip chain, don’t think they make them in ripping chains so you have to file or grind the 10° angle. The major downside is the filing, you’d probably only get 1 cut before it needs sharpening, but not many teeth.
Alternatively yeah always happy to help, I’m running a 36” bar atm and that does 2ft diameter no bother. That’s a full ripping chain and it runs beautifully, bought a horsechestnut log from Callum and that was 8ft long and 2ft wide. Was doing one cut in less than 1.5 mins.
Had the whole thing milled, hauled away and stacked in 3hrs
Can’t wait for the video, will be good to see that trunk milled up too

Ah very nice, I built mine out of some extruded ali box section and that works really well.
Assuming you’ll be milling with the 461?
Should be fine on birch but I’d be hesitant on bigger bits of oak, heard a few horror stories of people blowing up smaller saws trying to mill
I’ll probably be getting a 64” bar soon so obviously if you’d like to borrow that along with the 880 just give me a shout

Assuming that’s 36” at 3/8” rather than .404,

As Callum would say "well done sausage".
We'll sort out the details next week. I don't want to mash a good oak up. There're may be another one also....
and yeah - 3/8 not .404
