An enjoyable read, thx. Are the trees in rows? If so it’s a tree farm specifically for lumber? That’s nice new gear you have. Just this year I went to canned gas mix. As our local Stihl dealer says “it’s the only way to go.” Maybe unless you’re going thru a lot of gas.

Hey Steve - they are kind of in rows but as they get thinned it becomes more naturalised. There's rides that allow for access because as you have correctly guessed, these trees will become saleable timber in 100 years.

The gear is a few years old now and I do my best to keep it in a good state of maintenance. I don't always win that battle though but given how expensive everything is now, I want to get my monies worth out of it.

I do like using the pre-mixed alkalyte stuff rather than unleaded petrol and two stroke mix but it is judgement call. On days where I know I will using a lot of fuel I'll use normal petrol and mix it up myself because the pre-mix is £30 for five litres whereas normal petrol is £7.50. Yes, the machine will last longer if I use pre-mix but there's only so much abuse a smaller saw can take before it the cost of fixing it is outweighed by the cost of buying a new one.

If I'm taking my saw back to the local dealer for anything I always rock up with an empty tank on the saw because they always top it up with a free tank of motomix : )
